With Tejano music playing, drinks in hand, and a rainbow balloon arch in the background, friends and family gathered Thursday night to remember Jesse Tafalla...
During the candlelight vigil at Havana Bar & Grill in Oak Lawn, more than a hundred people of all ages showed up, including Dallas County Commissioner Elba García, Dallas City Council Member Adam Bazaldua and Sen. Royce West. More than a dozen people took the mic to share their favorite memories of Tafalla, what he stood for, the impact of his work in the community and the importance of honoring his legacy, specifically for youths.
Rice shared a story during the vigil about how she still has jumper cables that Tafalla handed to her on a day when her car died and he was the only one who picked up the phone to help her out. “I love you all, and thank you for being here, for always being there for Jesse and me,” she said. “You are all my family, too.”
“He lived to serve others. He was a leader who fought and always showed up,” Lozano said. “Jesse was a leader who led from the back.”During the vigil, while people from all walks of life remembered Tafalla, Reynato de Los Santos, a North Texas LULAC chapter member,“We want to make sure that his legacy continues to younger generations. We want everyone to know who Jesse was and what he meant for our Latino community,” De Los Santos said.
