Now, 125 years later, St. Aloysius continues its original mission of welcoming immigrants from different parts of the world.

“It’s a home to the immigrants – especially first and second generations,” Luz Ramirez, St. Al’s first Filipino parish trustee, said.

The carnival will be held around the historic and recently restored Lincoln Park fountain. There will be rides, booth games, hourly raffles, music, live entertainment and a wide array of ethnic foods. Park Tavern, down West Side Avenue, is staffing a wine bar along with a beer garden on Kensington Avenue outside the park confines. That might necessitate the free wellness testing, as well.

The carnival will also feature a souvenir shed with mugs and candles, and that resonates with William Hamill, a lifelong parishioner and one of few historic Hamills living in Jersey City in the parish where they belonged and graduated from the elementary school when it had over 2,000 students enrolled. Dr. John Hamill, his father, was the county Meadowview Hospital doctor and a practicing physician on Harrison Avenue. He and my mother, Grace, were classmates at St. Bridget’s School, Jersey City.

She came to the U.S. in 1982 with a promised job from her employer in the Philippines. She joined the parish in 1988.
