Franklin was dropped by Columbia Records before finding her gospel-inflected voice through sessions at a remote Alabama recording studio during which she drew on her own dark past. The movie also covers Franklin’s long involvement with the civil rights movement, having grown up the daughter of an influential Baptist minister who counted Martin Luther King Jr among his family friends.
