Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) took a commanding 4-0 lead over Terengganu FC (TFC) in the first leg of their Malaysian Cup semi-final, putting them in a strong position to reach the final.
Johor Darul Ta'zim ( JDT ) are in pole position to retain their Malaysian Cup title after a commanding 4-0 victory over Terengganu FC (TFC) in the first leg of the semi-final at Stadium Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, Kuala Nerus, last night. Goals from Arif Aiman Hanapi (two) and one each from Romel Morales and Bergson da Silva gave the reigning champions a strong advantage heading into the return leg at Stadium Sultan Ibrahim (SSI) on February 1st.
The result presents a daunting task for TFC, who need to overturn a four-goal deficit in the second leg at the 'Harimau Selatan' (Southern Tigers) fortress. Morales opened the scoring for JDT in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a chaotic situation in the TFC penalty area following a first-half corner. He almost doubled JDT's lead and his personal tally 19 minutes later but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review for a foul on a TFC player. While both teams continued to create chances, the lead remained at 1-0 until halftime. Early in the second half, VAR once again denied JDT an opportunity to extend their lead, as a penalty awarded for a foul on Arif Aiman by Alif Zakaria was overturned. Despite JDT's dominance in possession, TFC also created several attacks, including a golden chance in the 61st minute when Manuel Ott's shot went narrowly wide. However, Arif Aiman proved his quality as a national striker, scoring two goals in the 79th and 85th minutes. da Silva added a fourth goal late in the game, securing a comfortable advantage for JDT going into the final.
