Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO) said that one of the reasons Democrats are pressing for a government shutdown is to slow down investigations into President Joe Biden, which House Republicans are conducting regarding his son's foreign business dealings.
Smith, the House Ways and Means Committee chairman, claimed on Sunday that Republicans' investigation into Hunter Biden continues to"lead to President Biden," and that moving toward an impeachment inquiry would help give the party"strong tools" to continue its investigation. His statement comes shortly after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer pressed for avoiding a government shutdown.
The potential stalling of the House's investigation into the Biden family comes as several Republican lawmakers have pressed for an impeachment inquiry for Biden. In August, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said there is a “mountain of evidence” to impeach the president. On Friday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy confirmed he would not skip a floor vote to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden.“To open an impeachment inquiry is a serious matter, and House Republicans would not take it lightly or use it for political purposes," McCarthy said."The American people deserve to be heard on this matter through their elected representatives."
Greene said on Tuesday that she was confident McCarthy will start the process of an impeachment inquiry by September.
