Japan's Space One aborted its second attempt to launch the Kairos rocket on December 18, 2024, after detecting engine and trajectory issues. The rocket self-destructed three minutes into the flight, carrying five small satellites, including one from the Taiwan Space Agency. This setback follows a previous launch failure in March and highlights challenges in Japan's push to become Asia's space hub.

Live images from the local Wakayama prefecture government had shown the 18-metre solid-propellant rocket blasting off from Spaceport Kii in western Japan at 11.00am but whirling during its ascent. Tokyo-based Space One was founded in 2018 by Canon Electronics, IHI’s aerospace unit, construction firm Shimizu and a state-backed bank, with the goal of launching 20 small rockets a year by 2029 to capture growing satellite launch demand.
