Tomiko Itooka, a Japan ese woman recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest person in the world, died at the age of 116 at a nursing home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan , on December 29th. Yoshitsugu Nagata, a Basic Social Welfare Officer, stated that Itooka, who was born on May 23, 1908, leaves behind a long legacy as a symbol of strength and resilience.
Itooka was named the oldest person in the world last year after the death of 117-year-old Maria Branyas, according to the Gerontology Research Group. Her 116th birthday was celebrated last year with cake, flowers, and cards from Ashiya Mayor Ryosuke Takashima. Born in Osaka, Itooka was known as a youthful individual since her school days, even playing volleyball. At the age of 20, she married and was blessed with four children, two daughters and two sons. During World War II, Itooka managed her husband's textile factory office. After her husband's death in 1979, Itooka lived alone in Nara before moving to a nursing home. She is survived by a son, a daughter, and five grandchildren. According to Nagata, Itooka's funeral was held privately with family and close friends. Throughout her life, Itooka witnessed numerous historical events, including world wars, pandemics, and technological revolutions. The oldest person in the world now is a Brazilian nun, Inah Canabarro Lucas, who is also 116 years old and was born 16 days after Itooka. - AGENC
