TOKYO—In the wake of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s decision to quit, Japanese lawmakers prepared to select a leader who is likely to double down on a hawkish approach to China.to succeed Mr.
Suga include two former foreign ministers—Fumio Kishida, 64 years old, and Taro Kono, 58. Both have endorsed beefing up Japan’s defenses in response to China’s dispatch of military aircraft and armed ships around Taiwan and Japan’s southern islands.
