PM Yoshihide Suga will not run for governing party leadership election, indicating he will step down as Japanese leader at the end of this month, says public broadcaster NHK
PM Suga, 72, took office last September with support of about 70 percent but his ratings have sunk to record lows below 30 percent.
Suga, who took over after Shinzo Abe resigned last September citing ill health, has seen his support ratings sink to below 30 percent as the nation struggles with its worst wave of Covid-19 infections ahead of a general election this year.
