Japanese troops could join US marines for regular rotations through the Top End as Tokyo, Washington and Canberra continue to deepen defence and strategic ties in the face of China's swelling military might.

And in the wake of the talks, Mr Marles said the two countries were also looking at establishing a rotational presence of Japanese marines in Darwin, as part of the annual rotation of up to 2,500 US Marines who train in the Top End. "As the core of the like-minded countries partnership, we've been able to advance cooperation to an unparalleled level," she said.
"It's no longer an obstacle to pursuing cooperation in a place where Japan and Australia had their darkest moment." Australia and Japan are both growing increasingly anxious about the way China has intensified military exercises and operations in the Taiwan strait, as well as the way it has deployed its coast guard to harass and confront Philippines vessels in the South China Sea.
