Japan, like Taiwan to the south, has reported a significant uptick in Chinese aircraft activity in its surrounding skies this past year.
Kishi didn't disclose the nationality of the aircraft that triggered the remaining 16 JASDF sorties, but said the majority of PLA flights were for reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering purposes, according to Japan's Kyodo News.
Beijing's"intensified activities" were increasingly"diversified and sophisticated," Japan's defense chief was quoted as saying."In China, moves to rapidly develop unmanned aircraft have been seen." The official said Chinese and Russia bombers and escorts conducted joint flight drills near Japan for the third year in a row, a sign of further military coordination between Beijing and Moscow.
