Japan is about to enter a new era: Reiwa
TOKYO—After a fevered guessing game that preoccupied Japan for months, the government said Monday that the name of the new era when Crown Prince Naruhito becomes emperor May 1 will be Reiwa.
The name uses two Chinese characters: “rei,” which can mean auspicious in traditional texts, and “wa” meaning peace. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the name was drawn from an ancient Japanese poetry collection called the Manyoshu, a break from the tradition of drawing era names from Chinese classics.
