''Dirty Computer' reminds us we can celebrate blackness and march in the street to support BlackLivesMatter, while falling in love with ourselves and others at the same time that we fight against the patriarchy.'

love note to Black, queer, and femme America that reminds us we can celebrate blackness and march in the street to support #BlackLivesMatter, while falling in love with ourselves and others at the same time that we fight against the patriarchy. Though this album was released in 2018, each song speaks to the current chaos that is happening in our country.

“Crazy, Classic, Life” showcases the joy of being “young, Black, wild, and free” in spite of the harsh realities that we face traversing this world every day:…Me and you was friends, but to them, we the opposite. You living life while I’m walking around moppin’ shit. All I wanted was someone to love me too.The lyrics are spot -n and highlight an undeniable American truth that I must face every day.

If Black queer feminism were a song, “Django Jane” would be it. When the beat drops, Monáe reminds me of howY’all can’t ban it; made out like a bandit.I suggest they put a flag on a whole ’nother planet.Kept us hidden in the back of the store.

Although in “So Afraid,” Monáe is likely singing about being afraid to openly love, this song is really resonating with me right now, because I am so afraid of loving a piece of my identity that I often push aside—my Americanness. As a Black person I am afraid that I will be shot while jogging or have a police officer stand on my neck for almost nine whole minutes while I plead for my life until I die. My fear is completely legitimate, and white America is slowly waking up to my reality.

But nevertheless, I am American. Monáe’s final song, “Americans,” reminds me that I am American too. I am part of a fierce community of Black queer feminist Americans who show up and show out to ensure that we—and Black queer feminists around the world—finally achieve the human right to grow old and live unapologetically free.
