Two years after the deadly Capitol attack in Washington, inquiries have expanded and former President Donald Trump's potential legal exposure has only grown more perilous, with his future political viability unknown.

The district attorney had expected to make decisions on possible charges before the end of 2022, but a number of legal challenges pressed by key grand jury witnesses pushed late into the year.A Brookings Institution analysis of the Willis investigation, co-authored by Norm Eisen, a special counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Trump's first impeachment, concluded that the inquiry represents perhaps the most serious threat to Trump.

"We conclude that Trump is at substantial risk of criminal prosecution in Fulton County ," the report found.Even after last year's resignations of two prosecutors leading a criminal investigation into Trump's business operations to include alleged hush money payments to the former president's mistresses, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg maintained the inquiry was continuing.

Last month, Bragg sent a strong signal that the uncertain Trump inquiry was indeed alive with the appointment of former Justice Department official Matthew Colangelo. Colangelo, a former acting associate attorney general, was named senior counsel to focus on – among other priorities – high profile white-collar investigations.
