But as football season ended and the NCAA Contact Period began – allowing college coaches to visit high school campuses — Gardner noticed that not many schools were coming to see Smith. He wondered if they even knew he was back. After playing just a few weeks of competitive football last fall, Smith is 247Sports Composite’s No. 15 recruit in 2023. A five-star and second-ranked defensive lineman, Smith is an explosive rusher at 6-foot-4, 310-pounds. His size and quickness made him a multi-year starter that recruiting coordinators have made a priority, with representatives from nearly every top program visiting Carver-Montgomery’s campus or getting Smith to visit.
Garcia also isn’t surprised that Smith’s recruitment picked up after his weeks-long stint at the Florida powerhouse. The boarding school environment, being away from home, it’s “not for everyone.” Walter Nolen, last year’s top defensive tackle, transferred in and out of IMG before playing a game. Malik Bryant, 2023′s No. 2 LB from Orlando, Florida, also was an Academy transfer.
