James Gunn has recently criticized a certain style in past portrayals of Lex Luthor, and his reasoning is good news for Superman: Legacy.
James Gunn's criticism of a certain Lex Luthor style in past movies is right, and fans should be excited about what that means to the character in the DC Universe. Gunn is responsible for casting the next Lex Luthor movie actor, with the character reportedly being a part of Gunn's Superman: Legacy, the reboot movie of the hero that focuses on a younger Clark Kent and will be the first film of the new DC Universe.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Speaking with Smallville's Lex Luthor actor — Gunn's personal friend — Michael Rosenbaum on the actor's Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, the new DC Studios creative chief revealed that there is a certain style of a past actor's time in the role that he is not particularly fond of.
James Gunn's Lex Luthor Criticisms Explained The clip from the moment Gunn and Rosenbaum coyly comment that another actor might have played Lex Luthor differently than the character should be portrayed made the rounds on social media, with many believing that Gunn was making fun of Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal of the character in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Gunn is right in his criticism, as Hackman's Lex Luthor was quite different from how the character is in the comics. While Hackman is one of the best actors of all time, and his Lex Luthor is iconic, the version of the character in Donner's Superman movies was far more comedic than Lex is known to be, with Gunn being right in saying that "the portrayal can lean campy" and that he should have "seemed like a greater threat.
Why James Gunn Is Right To Reclaim Lex Luthor In The DCU Every live-action Lex Luthor actor has brought something different to the role, but the right mixture of gravitas, levity, intelligence, and menace hasn't quite been nailed on the big screen. Gunn's Superman: Legacy going for a more grounded and real take on the character is exactly what the DC Universe needs. Past versions of Lex — and the DCEU, really — struggled to maintain a consistent tone.
