San Diego State gets field goal with seven seconds remaining in 16-14 win as Mayden passes for 322 yards

Jalen Mayden played 65 snaps at safety for San Diego State two weeks ago against Toledo when SDSU was last on the field at Snapdragon Stadium.

“It felt more like just being a kid having fun again playing ball out there,” Mayden said after Monday’s practice. “Just seeing a spark back in the offense a little bit. Back out there throwing passes. Had to get a little rust and cobwebs off my arm, but everything felt natural.” SDSU made it 13-7 on a 30-yard Browning field goal — his second of the game and eighth straight on the season — with 11:16 remaining. The Aztecs could have made it a two-score game when Browning lined up for a 30-yarder with 4:57 left, but he missed it.

He took some warmup throws with new SDSU quarterbacks coach Ryan Lindley catching the return throw for him, got a good-luck hug from Aumavae, a drink from the water bottle third-string quarterback DJ Ralph handed him, then took the field. On third-and-14, new SDSU offensive coordinator Jeff Horton was content to call Byrd for another running play, which was short and led to another punt. The defense did get the ball back for the offense one more time before the opening period concluded.

Getting the ball back with 1:24 remaining in the first half, Mayden completed three straight first-down passes to move the ball to the Hawaii 28-yard line.
