Opposition leader has called for recognition referendum if yes vote fails, but shadow Indigenous Australians minister says ‘further discussion’ needed
“There has been no proposal for another referendum put to the National’s party room. If the Australian people say no in October the will of the people should be respected,” he said.
The opposition leader wouldn’t say when he would put such a referendum to voters, if he won office at a subsequent election, only saying that he would have a “sensible conversation” with Labor about the form it would take, and that “you go to a referendum when you believe it can pass”. The Albanese government has put forward the referendum question:"A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?" There shall be a body, to be called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
