New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins is fighting for his party's survival as the country heads to the polls on October 14.
"By the time she left office, Ardern had become a divisive rather than a unifying figure, a polarising figure rather than one who served as a means of bringing people together," professor of politics at Massey University Richard Shaw said.
Christopher Luxon is a businessman, most recently the former chief executive of Air NZ. He only joined parliament in the 2020 election and took the reins as opposition leader a year later.Shaw said Ardern had a style of leadership that was new for New Zealand and, at an international level, the country benefited from that.
"One of the really interesting things about this election is the two major parties are going to get their lowest vote share ever," Greaves said. But the rest of the seats are decided by proportional representation, and go to any party that secures 5 per cent of the overall vote. That may happen by a party reaching 61 by itself — as Labour did in 2020 — but the more likely path is via a formal coalition agreement, or another type of deal where the parties agree to work together.
Leader of NZ First Winston Peters first entered parliament in 1978 and he could be about to reprise his kingmaker role.In 2017, Ardern's Labour won just 36.9 per cent of the vote, securing 46 seats. National secured 56 seats.
