Italy became one of the countries hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic earlier this year; to date, it has recorded 242,149 cases and 34,914 deaths. The programme, coordinated by the ISS, will take in regional agencies, local health authorities, universities and 50 utility companies. Samples taken from water before it enters urban waste-treatment plants will be examined for any traces of the virus in the population, according to the ISS.
