Al Macias stepped down from his position as news director at KJZZ on Friday: “I still enjoy my work … but I’ve been doing this 47-plus years now. I’m at the age where it’s like, eh, I just thought it was the right time.”
It was an enticing offer, but it was a Tuesday afternoon, and for Macias, the news director at KJZZ, it was a work day.Probably not. Because Macias retired on Friday, meaning that after that, for the first time in more than 47 years, he would not be going to work. He has worked at TV stations KTVK, KPNX and KNXV, had a stint as the communications director for Maricopa County and then in 2010 went to work at KJZZ.“I still enjoy my work,” Macias, an affable straight shooter, said.
The news business is nearly unrecognizable in comparison, too. For one thing, there are a lot more TV stations, radio stations and of course online outlets covering news now. “There’s been multiple reviews,” he said. “But some people, it doesn’t matter what they hear. They’re just not going to believe it. I don’t know how you get through to people what are considered facts, legitimately.”“It is one of the frustrations that 45 years ago I did not have to deal with as a young reporter,” he said. “You presented stuff, and if you did it with ‘facts’ and proof, then it was accepted. People screamed and complained about it, maybe, but they accepted it.
“I still remember sometime in the mid-’70s going out and covering a forest fire, driving out there by myself, putting the camera on the sticks, framing it up with a wide shot and then I’d run around and stand in front and shoot it myself,” he said. “But I didn’t have to immediately tweet 13 stories about it and then file several posts on Facebook or Instagram. It’s a different animal.”
