Lukhanyo Am has been called into the 2023 Springbok squad as an injury replacement for wing Makazole Mapimpi.
The Springboks have called up outside centre Lukhanyo Am as an injury replacement for Makazole Mapimpi.‘ final Pool match against Tonga on Sunday.“He fractured his eye socket and cheek bone, so he’ll be out for four to six weeks. We’ll miss him as a player and what he brings to the team off the field,” said SA Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus.Lukhanyo Am, a member of the Springboks’ 2019 Rugby World Cup winning team, was called to replace Mapimpi.
The 29-year-old centre missed out on squad selection because of the injury. He and Handre Pollard were the big names missing form the Boks’ 33-man squad to play in the World Cup.Pollard was called to replace injured hooker Malcolm Marx and has already Pollard played his first match of the tournament.
Lukhanyo Am will only play in the quarter-finals in two weeks but gives the Boks more options going forward.
