One by one, Chinese restaurants across Perth were being set alight. It was a coordinated and sustained terrorism campaign, but most Australians have never heard of the attacks.
He had no idea that this would be the start of a series of violent events that would change him and his community forever.
As he stood in the wreckage that morning, he felt defeated. The dream that he had dedicated so much time to, had been burnt "black".Only a couple of years earlier, Vincent had opened the Man Lin with his wife Kwan, his identical twin brother Kelvin, and his sister-in-law May. For decades, Crispian Chan has been searching for answers about the attacks on Perth's Chinese community.
"It's kind of like, 'If you're not going to leave, then this is the stuff we're going to do to you,'" she says. While the fire had put her out of work, her father was still working in another Chinese restaurant in Perth and she recalls feeling worried about his safety.Detective Maurie Tong was the head of the WA Police Arson Squad at the time, tasked with leading the investigation into the fires.
As a kid, Crispian Chan remembers seeing an "Asians Out" poster near the Man Lin years before it was set alight. Mr Hill acknowledges that maybe the police didn't have the power or resources to address the issue, but he was concerned a bigger issue was at play in the WA Police Force during this time. "I never, ever once saw any incidents of not stepping in and a proper police investigation being done," he says.
No-one was in the restaurant when the bomb detonated but Mr Tong feared what would happen if the group were to strike during trading hours.
