After keeping silent about the Greens’ alleged role in pro-Palestine blockades of electoral offices, the prime minister tapped into a public mood by letting rip

It’s not just in the parliament, where there was an above-average amount of vitriol this week. And it’s not just outside Labor MPs’ electorate offices, where protesters have been demanding a stronger government stance against the war in Gaza, and where windows have been smashed, graffiti sprayed, staff harassed and doors closed to the public – who the politicians are there to serve.

Anthony Albanese has been angry for months about the encampment that was established outside his own electorate office in Sydney’s inner west since soon after Israel launched its military offensive in retaliation for the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks. MPs were coming under growing pressure over the protests in their workplaces and became increasingly concerned that something really bad was going to happen. Police shared those fears.

By the time Labor MPs returned to parliament on Monday, they’d had enough. They made their feelings known to the prime minister and in Tuesday morning’s weekly caucus meeting, some of them let rip, receiving overwhelming support from colleagues for airing their views. Aware that the issue had hit boiling point, Albanese got in first, raising the protests in his opening address to the meeting and condemning federal and state Greens for supporting the blockades.

In April, Bandt’s social media accounts praised those who were gathering weekly in central Melbourne. This is why Albanese suddenly abandoned official silence. He was getting grief from his MPs who were getting grief from protesters and constituents, with Greens opponents breathing down their necks. And he was – is – worried about what might happen.
