The Coalition wants to defeat the Voice because it wants to inflict a political loss on the prime minister.

Anthony Albanese’s Garma speech, one of the most important he will give on the Indigenous Voice to parliament, seeks to make two key points.was a simple proposition that boiled down to one thing – advice. As in, it is nothing more than a group of Indigenous Australians advising the government on how to best help Indigenous Australians, the country’s most disadvantaged citizens, and, in doing so, ensure money is better spent.

Dutton and Co will argue they want a different voice, one with a regional focus rather that the alleged “Canberra voice” Albanese et al. are proposing. This is largely sophistry. The final shape of the Voice will be designed by the parliament – Dutton included – if the referendum gets up. Look at parliament this week. The Opposition asked question after question on the Voice, and then accused the government of talking about the Voice and not the cost of living.

“We can’t win the election unless we defeat the Voice solidly, ie we need to defeat it to get to the election starting line,” texted one Coalition MP during Wednesday’s exchanges between Albanese and Dutton.Albanese’s points about simplicity and the disingenuous nature of the No campaign need to be hammered home time and again if the referendum is to be salvaged.
