OPINION: Mike Cannon-Brookes and Andrew Forrest’s dispute over Sun Cable is a fascinating fight between two giant egos.

In the years that David Griffin has been plugging Sun Cable to the Australian and global media, one main fact offset what sounded like a completely ludicrous idea to send solar power under the oceans to south-east Asia.

The Forrest camp allowed itself to be quoted asserting that: “Cannon-Brookes’ expertise lay in tech, but was perhaps out of his depth with big infrastructure projects”.

Which makes the following quote from the article somewhat provocative: “Dr Forrest, meanwhile, has also not ruled out making a bid to buy Sun Cable from the administrators and it is believed he also still sees merit in the ambitious project.” Media reports said construction would start by 2024, and cost $35 billion. Apparently Forrest was unhappy with how much money the business had spent already, even though most of that was on preparatory work like sending a boat out to scan the seabed for a good route, and testing the soil where the panels would be installed.
