In his first interview post-cancellation, ‘Gossip Girl’ creator Josh Safran speaks to VF about the series’ potential future, his plans for season three, and more.
was going to be a new series regular, and you meet him in Rome at the end of season two. He meets Zoya and there's a lovely scene between them, but there was a lot more. He interacted with the whole cast and there was a very big motor with his character, and that was removed.Somebody in this process said to me—which is very true—that reboots are just maybe not always going to be a thing that we do. You cannot make them all happy. Everybody has a personal experience with their favorite shows.
As someone who loved the original and grew to love the reboot, I really enjoyed seeing diverse, queer, Black, messy characters on screen. We don't get that often, and I'm sad to lose that. That was the reason to do it, and it only got better. It's funny, I've been lying awake since getting the news.I feel like when you watch the finale you'll see a lot of people are left in good places, but Shan, Monet , and Luna … it’s not that they're left in bad places. I was very excited to go where we were going with them. So it's just… it's sad. I will think about them forever. I wish I could carry them with me to some other show.
One thing I wasn't able to do is change the outcome of one of the core relationships because I didn't reshoot anything, so I couldn't add any footage. So the ending to one of the core relationships was meant to be resolved in season three. I'm afraid that for all of history, it's sort of saying polyamory can't work, and that's not what we were saying.
For the fans, look, if you make a loud enough noise, people will listen, if that's something you want to do. And if not, thank you for all the noise you've made along the way. I'm very grateful.
