St Andrew’s Cathedral School will set up a special drop-in counselling service and cancel or postpone some exams and assessments as students and staff prepare to return on Monday after the murder of water polo coach Lilie James.

In a letter to parents on Friday afternoon, the head of St Andrew’s, Dr Julie McGonigle, thanked the school community for their “outpouring of support and prayers over the past 36 hours”. “As you might imagine, today with staff has been very difficult, and your messages of parent support have provided great strength,” she said.

“Often when there is a crisis, and particularly if many people are affected, it can become a very large counselling situation. The more counsellors and psychologists schools can send, the more helpful that is,” Collier said.“We also need to make sure Julie and all the school’s staff have as much support as possible. Leadership in a crisis is lonely. And the repercussions will ripple through the school for some time.
