Jessica Rudd admits she led a life of privilege until she had children, when she realised how the inequality built into the childcare system hurt working women
Jessica Rudd smiles sheepishly; she is telling an embarrassing story. It’s about learning the hard way that those who write for public consumption, one of the many jobs she has held in her diverse career, can live to regret – or at least cringe at – the opinions they once held so stridently., which showcased 27-year-old Jess, she says, “in all her naive glory”.
Rudd has gone through many iterations since the nation first got to know her as the twentysomething newlywed daughter of prime minister Kevin Rudd who had graduated from law and thrown herself into the Kevin ’07 election campaign. She has worked in crisis communications, written novels and columns, founded her own business , and now sits on the boards of the Australian Agricultural Company and HostPlus. Last year she was named pro-chancellor of her alma mater, Queensland’s Griffith University.
Like many Australian mothers, she is frustrated that the country’s women can’t afford to use their skills because childcare is too expensive. “We’re importing skills to this economy, we’re saying there’s a skill shortage, and we have the most highly educated women in the world,” she says. “What is wrong with us? We have so much to offer, and we can’t afford to go to work.”
