Following US President Donald Trump's announcement about potential US control of Gaza, Israel's Defence Minister ordered the army to prepare a plan for the 'voluntary departure' of Gaza residents. Trump's proposal has sparked widespread international condemnation and concerns about forced displacement, a war crime under the Geneva Conventions. Meanwhile, Hamas condemned the plan and insisted Palestinians are attached to their land.

JERUSALEM - Israel 's defence minister ordered the army on Thursday to prepare a plan to allow the"voluntary departure" of residents from Gaza , after US President Donald Trump drew widespread condemnation for announcing plans to take over the strip.

Hamas official Basem Naim accused Katz of trying to cover up"for a state that has failed to achieve any of its objectives in the war on Gaza", and said Palestinians are too attached to their land to ever leave. Many were driven out or fled to Gaza, the West Bank and neighbouring Arab states including Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, where their descendants still live in refugee camps. Israel disputes the account that they were forced out.

Katz accused Hamas of holding Palestinians hostage in Gaza, preventing their departure and extorting money from them through the humanitarian aid system. He did not elaborate. Regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia rejected the proposal outright and Jordan's King Abdullah, who will meet Trump at the White House next week, said on Wednesday he rejected any attempts to annex land and displace Palestinians.
