After months of stalemate, Israel and Hamas are reportedly close to finalizing a ceasefire agreement to end the ongoing war in Gaza. High-ranking officials from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt have resumed mediation efforts in recent weeks, reporting greater willingness and cooperation from both sides to reach an agreement. Hamas officials say they are ready to be more flexible regarding the timeframe for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has also announced that the implementation of the agreement is closer than ever before. Officials on all sides warn that crucial details still need to be worked out, but remain more optimistic about the outcome. This follows several factors, including Israel inflicting heavy damage on Hamas throughout the war, and the group facing increasing isolation after a lack of support from Hezbollah and Iran, which are experiencing setbacks in Lebanon and Syria. Both the Biden and Trump administrations in the US have indicated their desire to see an agreement finalized before the change in White House leadership on January 20th. According to Egyptian and Hamas officials, the agreement will be implemented in stages, including a cessation of hostilities, the exchange of Israeli hostages for the release of Palestinian prisoners, and an increase in aid to the Gaza Strip. The first phase is expected to last six to eight weeks, during which Hamas will release approximately 30 hostages believed to be alive, including three or four US-Israeli dual nationals. Israel, in turn, will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including up to 100 individuals serving long sentences for alleged involvement in bloody attacks against the regime.
