When minorities in Australia take sides in foreign conflicts, it’s not out of a refusal to integrate. It is quite the opposite.
The second casualty of war, after truth, is the slow incessant pressure on citizen dissent. This is not only seen among Israelis and Palestinians on the front line, but also felt here in Australia and other liberal democracies that have been dragged into the heated debate.
Calls for greater even-handedness are aimed at ensuring the nation’s foreign policy does not end up being tone-deaf to anger on both sides. The essence of their intervention is that Australia can ill-afford to take sides, given its complex and interwoven pedigree. The common denominator in the Middle East is the incapacity of each side to imagine they might one day show respect for one another.
Many countries such as Australia today comprise complex diaspora and minorities who occasionally will seek to influence national policy decisions. That is a healthy sign because the eventual outcome is not predetermined by a hidden hand inferring what the national interest is.
