The Gaza militant group launched its biggest sustained assault in years, prompting Israel's military to call up reservists and order retaliatory strikes.
The government in Cairo has reached out to Israeli and Hamas officials through political and security channels in an effort to assess the situation and promote calm, according to several Egyptian officials.
The outreach has thus far yielded limited results, with Israeli officials insisting that they must first respond to Saturday’s attacks before considering a cease-fire. Egypt, which shares a border with both Israel and Gaza, was credited with helping the Biden administration in 2021 broker a cease-fire when major conflict last erupted between Israel and Hamas fighters.
