Israel's attorney general plans to charge Netanyahu with bribery, fraud and breach of trust, raising pressure on the premier ahead of elections

TEL AVIV—Israel’s attorney general said he would charge Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with bribery, fraud and breach of trust, in what could mark the first time a sitting Israeli prime minister has faced criminal charges and imperil Mr. Netanyahu’s bid to become the country’s longest-serving leader in April’s election.

Israeli prime ministers aren’t required to resign if they are charged with a crime, but the decision could lead to a highly unusual situation in which Mr. Netanyahu could stand trial while running the country.
