PUTRAJAYA: The standard operating procedure (SOP) for the Chini-by election will be used for the upcoming Slim by-election with several improvements to prevent the spread of Covid-19, says Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said the use of face masks during campaign activities would be mandatory since they would involve crowds.

"The special Cabinet committee reviewed the guidelines for the Chini by-election and agreed for it to be used for Slim, with several improvements," he said at a press conference on Thursday . The Slim by-election, for which nomination day is Aug 15 and polling day on Aug 29, will be the second by-election held during the movement control order period. The SOP allows parties to set up operation and command centres, but they must be registered with the Election Commission to facilitate monitoring.

Ismail said campaigns and ceramah could only be held in closed premises and gated areas with the number of participants allowed depending on the size of the venue but no more than 250 people."The EC will hold discussions with representatives of candidates for the by-election and the guidelines are drawn up based on the current situation taking the Covid-19 pandemic into consideration," he said.

He also said the guidelines for the by-election were based on the power given under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act or Act 342.
