COLBY MARTIN: Why Pride month might just be the most Christian month of the year
Today is the final Sunday in June, marking it as the last opportunity for churches to honor Pride month and perhaps even take a risk to celebrate it. However, being a pastor for more than 20 years provides me all the evidence I need to know that most churches in our country will fly right past Pride. Actually, even more to the point, I’ll bet most pastors in most churches will sigh with relief that at last this month has come to an end.
My first decade in ministry operated out of this traditional, conservative mindset. Born and raised in the evangelical world, I was trained to be a pastor by Baptist professors adamant that the Bible is clear with regards to the sinfulness of homosexuality.
“Let us build ourselves a city ... so that we might make a name for ourselves” . God, seeing that they might actually pull it off, intervenes by scattering the people across the earth and mixing up their languages. Which is to say, I think God sees the human tendency to bring everyone under one banner, with one tongue and one culture, where everyone looks and thinks and talks the same, and worries for us. Perhaps God knows what awaits us at the end of the path of sameness.
For me, it means that when the Spirit of God gets her way, She prefers diversity over uniformity.
