Dr Rosner says instead, many Christians follow the teachings of Jesus that instruct them to stay away from the love of money, and that their wealth or income be shared with their church through "tithing".
Gaining excessive wealth in Islam is not seen as something to strive towards. Instead, greed is considered to be a corrupting force. One of the five pillars of Islam is to give zakat, similar to the Jewish concept of tzedakah. Under Islamic law, zakat requires Muslims to give 2.5 per cent of their annual income to charity.
"The Prophet was a merchant. So, conducting business and engaging in trade and earning money is not inherently a bad thing in and of itself," Dr Woodlock says.
