24-year-old Olivia Humphreys designed 'genius' device to assist patients undergoing chemotherapy
An Irish student inventor who designed a clever device to aid cancer sufferers has been given a huge boost in her bid to win a top international award.
Olivia’s innovative invention is on the Top 20 Dyson Award shortlist which gives her a great chance of scooping the global award on November 13 that includes a €38,000 prize to accelerate the winning invention.The 24-year-old’s genius invention tackles the problem of current scalp-cooling for chemotherapy patients. It’s a portable thermoelectric battery-operated device that enables those receiving cancer treatment to spend less time in the hospital on a chemotherapy infusion day.
And she added: “The most exciting aspect of Athena is its potential for further development. My early conversations with engineers have been very positive, filled with discussions about ideas and possible tweaks. It's exciting, there is a lot to be done!”
