Craig Breen shared his excitement to get back in the car just days before he was killed in a crash during pre-race testing in Croatia.
The 33-year-old was preparing for a World Rally Championship race in Croatia when his car spun off the course and into a wooden pole.
Just two days before his death he had posted about his love of rally driving and his excitement at getting back behind the wheel. “When someone tells you we’re back in the Rally1 car again this week," he wrote alongside a picture of himself smiling. The 82 WRC veteran was the only victim with police and Hyundai Motorsport investigating the cause of the crash.“Hyundai Motorsport is deeply saddened to confirm that driver Craig Breen today lost his life following an accident during the pre-event test for Croatia Rally,” a statement from Hyundai read on Thursday.
Tributes for the charismatic Irishman have begun to flow as he is remembered for his “quick wit” and “emotional” answers when speaking to the media. “Breen's talent behind the wheel was matched only by his kind and generous nature outside the car. Despite his success in the WRC, Breen never forgot his roots and remained deeply connected to his native Ireland,” a statement from the WRC read.Fun times, laughter, tears and now you're reuniting with Jaffa. You have left us all feeling empty lad. RIP Craig Breen.ð
