Heimir Hallgrímsson has left Matt Doherty and Jake O'Brien out of the Republic of Ireland squad to face Finland and Greece in the UEFA Nations League next week.
“I called Matt yesterday and explained it. He wasn’t happy. Rather than bring him in and have him on the bench, it’s better to leave him out for this camp."We are so happy for him to get the goals last night and it’s nice to see but we had the squad selected. You could also see he was tired in the game and is not fully match fit. He is in our back-up squad, it’s easy to call up a guy who scored four goals.“The reason is there is not a big difference between the players in my opinion.
“So I had to take a spell out to make sure I got it right and it didn’t get any worse and I’ve done that now. Seamus Coleman and Will Smallbone have been ruled out of Ireland’s Nations League double-header away to Finland and Greece.
