Iraqi authorities are prosecuting children suspected of ties to the Daesh terror group in a “deeply flawed” process – HRW report says
An Iraqi policeman gestures at a group of displaced women and children at a collection point west of Mosul on the outskirts of Tal Afar, Iraq, Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017.
Iraq announced it defeated Daesh in late 2017, but has continued to try men, women, and children, including foreigners, accused of belonging to the group. While Daesh did widely recruit and indoctrinate children, having some carry out executions, most of those interviewed by HRW said they never fought with the group.
Even after their release, the boys do not return home out of fear of re-arrest or retribution by their communities.
