PETALING JAYA: The Ipoh High Court today granted a temporary injunction to stop the Manjung municipal council from shooting stray dogs.
Rajesh Nagarajan, from Lawyers for Animal Rights, said High Court judge Mohd Radzi Harun granted the injunction based on the group’s application arguing that the council had committed an illegal act in violation of the Animal Welfare Act 2015. Section 30 of the act states that no animal may be killed by firearms unless it is authorised by the veterinary authority in an emergency, or for disease control.“For the first time, an injunction has been granted against the shooting of dogs.”
The injunction was filed on Friday after the council issued a circular on June 29 stating that it would conduct an operation to eradicate stray dogs by shooting them. The operation to shoot stray dogs, crows and other animals was conducted from July 1 to 4 and was set to continue from today to July 11.The court has fixed July 28 for case management.
