Foxconn will start making surgical face masks alongside Apple products at its Shenzhen factory in response to the outbreak of coronavirus that has sickened thousands of people, media reports said Friday. The reports cited a statement made by Foxconn, the world's biggest contract electronics manufacturer, on the Chinese social media site WeChat. "Face masks are now the standard equipment in our fight against the epidemic," said the statement, according to AFP. Foxconn makes iPhones and other Apple products at factories in China, which are expected to reopen on Feb. 10 after the annual Lunar New Year holiday which was extended this year because of the illness. The World Health Organization said Friday that there is a shortage of personal protective equipment as a result of the outbreak. Foxconn said it expects to produce 20 million masks by end-February. There are now 31,420 confirmed coronavirus cases and at least 638 people have died as a result of the virus, according to the latest figures from the World Health Organization. In China, there are 31,161 confirmed cases and 636 deaths, China's National Health Commission said in its most recent update, while the U.S. has at least 12 confirmed cases, according to local and federal health officials. This coronavirus, which has been declared a public health emergency, originated in Wuhan, China, late last year and has now spread to 25 countries.
