For every bag of groceries, personal care items, or $10 donated to Johnston’s food pantry during the month of December, she would run one mile. Now she owes them 191 miles.
In November, Mayor Paula Dierenfeld issued a challenge to the citizens of Johnston, Iowa: For every bag of groceries, personal care items, or $10 donated to Johnston’s food pantry during the month of December, she would run one mile.On the streets of Johnston, a town of 17,000 residents just outside of Des Moines, Dierenfeld has been chipping away at those 191 miles. She began on New Year’s Eve, and as of Thursday morning, she had already run 81 miles and had six more planned for the evening.
Dierenfeld attended a high school that did not offer sports for girls, but in her early 20s, she took up running and has kept it up since, for the most part. Dierenfeld balances her training with 70 hours per week of work—50 or more as an attorney, and approximately 20 as mayor, which is a volunteer position. Dierenfeld is entering her ninth year as Johnston’s mayor, having been elected to five two-year terms thus far.
