“It raised so many questions for me, so many big philosophical questions,” says Polley in a phone interview. “Not just about the issues that are sort of obvious, but issues around faith and forgiveness and culpability and systems of power. So many difficult, nuanced questions that I just wanted to dive deeper into. I just found myself walking around thinking about it nonstop.”
“They're trying to untangle and parse out what their faith is and the good in their faith, and what they want to stay true to and move towards from structures and hierarchies that have sprung up around their faith,” Polley says. “That can be really hard to do. Ultimately, I think what the women in the film are doing is not abandoning their faith but trying to move towards it by remaking what it looks like in terms of how it's actualized in the society they want to live in.
