I was raised as a girl. I wore pretty dresses and barrettes in my hair. When I was in second grade I started growing facial hair and breasts at the same time. My entire body, including my legs, underarms, and torso was covered in hair. I remember discovering that I had an Adam’s apple around the same time I had my firstwhen I was eight. I knew I was different, I just didn’t know how to make sense of the differences.
The harm doesn’t stop in exam and operating rooms. State legislators are attempting to codify the erasure of intersex bodies while denying life-saving care to trans youth. According to, in 2022 legislative sessions, 22 states had a pending or proposed bill that would “purport to authorize intersex surgery.” Three more states, Arizona, Arkansas, and Alabama have passed such bills. Legislative sessions in 2023 could see more attacks on intersex bodies.
Still, care providers are not living up to a core tenet of the Hippocratic Oath: “do no harm.” The result of more than six decades of these human rights violations has been irreversible harm, beyond even physical ramifications.” are troubling. The first study of its kind domestically found that more than 43% of participants rated their physical health as fair/poor and 53% reported fair/poor mental health. Many respondents reported being diagnosed with depression , anxiety , or PTSD .
