Health insurers are trying to get rid of a blanket mandate that they pay for coronavirus antibody tests, saying some are too flawed to produce useful results

“When I’m talking to people running factories they’re talking about doing weekly or monthly testing, and that gets insanely expensive pretty quick,” saidThe insurer mandate originated in a coronavirus relief package that Congress passed in March. Lawmakers envisioned Covid-19 diagnostic testing, including associated doctor or hospital visits, at no cost to patients.

The Trump administration has yet to announce what Medicare plans to pay for the tests, so there’s no benchmark that private insurers can negotiate with the test manufacturers.Insurance groups have declined to discuss what they’re paying on average, and a lab lobby group declined to provide any pricing dataQuest Diagnostics is selling a self-test online for $119, plus a $10 fee. That doesn’t include a doctor’s visit.

Expenses for big companies could vary depending on factors like if they have their own on-site clinics to administer tests, as well as the frequency and the number of employees who'd need them.Sign UpBy signing up you agree to receive email newsletters or alerts from POLITICO.
