The library board's decision to pass on Nichelle Hayes as CEO has sparking mistrust and concerns of racial inequity.
The decision to appoint Morley instead of Hayes reveals the board is not committed to systemic change addressing racial inequity, former library worker Mahasin Ameen told IndyStar.
They added that many staff continue to work on implementation of Ice Miller's recommendations, which include restoring trust within the library system and updating and reinforcing harassment investigation processes. Ice Miller also had recommended the board support the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion officer, who quit in November for still-unexplained reasons. The board's decision making, and the community backlash, ultimately have left it without a permanent CEO.
Salinas and Tribble sent a joint emailed statement to IndyStar to defend the selection and said the decision was in part determined by a survey of employees and community members, along with professional qualifications. They said Morley had 20 years in administrative experience and Hayes had served as interim CEO less than a year.
