An oncologist was surprised to see that health insurer WellCare denied approval for a drug she had prescribed within the indication. Before she could appeal, WellCare restarted the review process.
"I prescribed within the indication," Hwang, a medical oncologist with Henry Ford Health specializing in genitourinary cancers, toldposted to Twitter
Following a prior authorization denial, physicians typically cannot simply resubmit the request, even if it was a company error. When Hwang tweeted about the error on September 30, shefrom WellCare asking her to"please follow the appeals process on the denial letter." Even though Hwang had bypassed the appeals process, it took over a week for the drug to be approved. The entire process took a few weeks, she said.
