One year after StarWars released, fans gathered to watch the next installment--the Star Wars Holiday Special--and nothing was ever the same again. A new doc premiering at SXSW, A Disturbance in the Force, will explore the making of the infamous special.
A documentary about the making of the Star Wars Holiday Special will premiere in 2023. The Holiday Special aired for the first and only time on CBS in 1978. Following the groundbreaking success of the original Star Wars in 1977, the Holiday Special became infamous for its many questionable choices, from Wookiees speaking for extended periods of time without subtitles, to jumping between scenes in live-action and animation.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY According to ComicBook.com, the documentary about the Star Wars Holiday Special is titled A Disturbance in the Force and will make its worldwide debut at the 2023 South by Southwest Film Festival . After SXSW, it is currently unknown if the documentary will be released to the public or if it will continue playing at other film festivals.
"In 1977, Star Wars became a cultural phenomenon that single-handedly revitalized a stagnant film industry, and forever changed how films were sold, made, and marketed. Movies would never be the same again. A year later, neither would television. In 1978, CBS aired the two-hour Star Wars Holiday Special during the week of Thanksgiving and was watched by 13 million people. It never re-aired.
Outside of Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe recently concluded Phase 4 with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+. Like its Star Wars predecessor, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special features a combination of live-action and animation. In addition to the main live-action story of Drax and Mantis trying to bring Kevin Bacon to Peter Quill for Christmas, there is also an animated story about Christmas that is a flashback with Yondu and a young Peter.
Between The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the Star Wars Holiday Special's impact on Star Wars media in recent years, it is the perfect time for A Disturbance in the Force to be released. The timeliness in regard to two of the biggest franchises in the world is undeniable. The documentary can provide more insight into how and why the Holiday Special was made while exploring its ongoing legacy and impact on Star Wars and other popular culture.
